Sheffield swimmers get Olympic opportunity
Great Britain’s next wave of Olympic swimmers are being given an extra chance to hone their skills this summer in Sheffield at one of the country’s top sports centres. Ponds Forge International Sports Centre is opening its Olympic sized competition pool for additional full day sessions for members of the public to swim in the 50m lanes, like Rebecca Adlington and Michael Phelps.
The pool at Ponds Forge, one of only four Olympic-sized pools in the UK, is usually open to pay-as-you-go swimmers and as part of the Fitness Unlimited membership package as 25m lanes and two weekly 50m evening sessions, but opening the lanes for full days will give more swimmers more chance to emulate the gold medal winners from Beijing. Helen Broadbent, general manager at the Sheffield International Venues-managed sports centre, said: “The 50m pool is a real asset to Sheffield and it is rare that we have the chance to open it up in full length lanes for whole days for the public because of the major competitions and sessions we have on. “But we have a few opportunities this month and it coincides perfectly with British successes in the pool in Beijing so it makes sense to give the Sheffield public extra chances to see what our top swimmers go through for their medals.“
"There are not many places in the UK where you can swim 50m lengths like an Olympian and we pride ourselves on being able to provide that service.” All day 50m swimming is available at Ponds Forge on Sunday 24, Monday 25 and Sunday 31 August.
