Sports Awards Gain Olympic Backing

South Yorkshire’s inaugural sports awards have been given a mighty punch of support from a trio of locally based young Olympians.  Boxers James DeGale and Tony Jefferies, along with swimmer James Kirton are currently in Beijing competing in the Games this summer.  All three are based in South Yorkshire and the Star and St John Sports Awards recognises achievements of locally based sports men and women, including triumphs in China.

De Gale, 22 is a middleweight from London, while Jefferies, 23 is a light heavyweight from Sunderland. Both currently train at EIS - Sheffield under coach Terry Edwards.

De Gale said: “Its going to be an excellent evening. It’s really important that the sports men and women of South Yorkshire are recognised for their talent.” Jefferies added: “The Sports Awards are going to be a fantastic event I’m sure. It’s a great way to highlight the huge range of sporting talent we have in Sheffield and the wider region.”

Kirton, 23, from Barnsley, competed in the men's 200m breaststroke n Beijing this week. He too trains in Sheffield at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

James says: “Sheffield is a sport city and the Sports Awards will be one of the highlights of the sporting year. Hopefully after I come back from the Olympics, I will be there on the night to celebrate everyone’s achievements.” The Star and St John Sports Awards will be taking place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, on October 9 and with celebrity guests, entertainment and a four course dinner, it will be the sporting event of the year in South Yorkshire. Those nominated for an award must have been born, live or operate in South Yorkshire and the region. A special 2008 Olympic Achievement accolade will also be presented to a sporting star who has achieved greatness at the games.
