| Ponds Forge boosts Sheffield’s city of sport tag | Sheffield’s reputation as the UK’s city of sport is set for a boost next month with Ponds Forge International Sports Centre hosting 11 national events in March.
The Sheffield International Venues (SIV) managed facility will see hundreds of the UK’s leading sportsmen and women, and Olympic hopefuls, pass through its doors to compete in a range of different sports and disciplines.
Swimming leads the way with four events throughout the month, including the nine-day long British Championships from Friday 28th March, which sees Britain’s swimmers battle it out for places in the Olympic squad for Beijing, and a national life saving event on Saturday 8th March.
Other UK championships at Ponds Forge in March include the National Boccia Championships, UKUA National Ultimate Frisbee Championships, British Orienteering and the ETTA National Table Tennis Championships. British netball’s Super League play-offs, a wheelchair basketball GB training camp and a UK futsal tournament also take place at Ponds Forge during March.
Helen Broadbent, Ponds Forge general manager, said:
“March will be a busy month for us but very exciting. We will see a diverse range of top level sports being played here and once again prove ourselves to be a leading venue for many UK sports.
“We will be welcoming sports people and spectators from all over Great Britain and we’d like to urge Sheffielders to come and experience some of the events we’re hosting this month. It really is a chance to see some exceptional sporting performances.”
